MODERN is a form of dance that started as a response to the classical ballet dance movement. In modern, dancers steer away from the classic upright, pointed dance moves of ballet and dance much more flexed and down in the floor. It is known as the most expressful of dance styles, in that most pieces are choreographed to evoke a particular feeling.
Our beginner through advanced modern classes are centered around learning modern dance from the inside out, meaning that our students are taught the basics of the human anatomy and how particular parts of the body were made to move, accompanied by stellar dance construction.
The modern technique that is studied at DCBL is inspired by styles of Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Amy Marshall and Jennifer Muller. The students practice warm-up routines created by each of these choreographers alongside the personal style of our studio’s teacher. Learning the work of these choreographers and artists gives the students a chance to understand the modern world a bit more. Along with the modern technique our students learn, ballet technique is incorporated as well. The benefit of learning a variety styles allows the students to find one that best suits them.
